Gratitude Day 9 – Hello time to rejoice today is Monday!!

Wow what an awesome experience, I survived the weekend and I have the pleasure of experiencing another Monday. I know many have an issue with Monday. Here is what I have come to realize If I am able to breathe and able to use any of my senses it is a wonderful day. So many for some reason look forward to the weekend. Why not look forward to each and every day. Take time to day to enjoy the day. If you are in Tulsa why not take in a Toastmasters meeting with Tulsa Toastmasters they meet every Monday night at 6:30 in the Martin Regional Library.

Proverbs 9:8 Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you

I want to encourage you to come to a Toastmaster experience. What is Toastmasters you ask? Toastmasters easily explained is an opportunity to practice communication and leadership skills in a nonthreatening environment. You can look for local clubs by visiting toastmasters.org or you can come and visit my club. We all need practice perhaps we want to become better at interview skills, maybe an impromptu interview, or how about asking that particular person out. Perhaps you want to learn to be better at doing peer reviews at Toastmasters we can help you do it all.

Gratitude Day 8 – Wisdom more precious than rubies

My Grandfather was always giving me nuggets of wisdom as I was growing up. Every now and again when I am having problems processing something I will go out to “Old Blue” my Grandfathers ’83 Chevy C-10 for some reason it helps me focus my thoughts; my Grandfather was at least to me a wise man, and I valued his knowledge. I miss him but I know he is with me in my heart.

Proverbs 8:11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies,     and nothing you desire can compare with her.

Sometimes it is helpful to withdraw from a situation just like when I go sit in my Grandfathers old truck to think. This withdrawal allows you step back from the issue and then refocus.

Gratitude Day 7 – Keep my Word

I am so grateful for my Father and my Grandfather they taught me to always try to be a person of my word. I was taught to have my yes’s be yes and my no’s no. No was also one of the hardest words for me to master. To be perfectly honest; I still have problems with the word. As I move more in to the practice of minimization, I am finding it easier. By practicing No I am actually saying yes to being able to spend time on and with those that matter most to me.

Proverbs 7:1-3 My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.  Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.  Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

As we move into the holiday season we are more prone to overscheduling ourselves. When we overschedule we tend to get tenser with the pressure of the season and the commitment and obligations we keep saying yes to. This year let’s work on saying No more and Yes less. Do those things that bring you enjoyment and helps you focus on those things that matter most to you.

Gratitude Day 6 — Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is only 21 days away. Images of food, parades, and football abound. Some stores for some reason don’t care about family they want to be open to try to get some money out of the consumer. They open early on Friday for what it’s called “Black Friday” My challenge for you this season is to have all your dinner shopping done before Wednesday the 25th of November. Thanksgiving is a time for celebration with family. I challenge you to stay home with family don’t go to any store on Thursday, if you aren’t there the stores have no reason to be open.

Proverbs 6:6-8 Go to the any, you sluggard; consider its ways be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.

A further challenge for you is to work on not keeping up with the “Jones”, not getting the latest and greatest, the new shiny object. This year focus on giving presence instead of presents. This season put down the screens and look up enjoy those who are around you. Be thankful for those around you. This year, for those hosting Thanksgiving dinner why not put a basket at the entrance with a sign that says “Today we are thankful for each other; we want to experience your presence with us today, please put your phone in the basket and come on in.

Gratitude Day 5 — God watches over us

I was thinking back to September 23, 2015. I am in for a surgery consult; the surgeon acknowledges the need for the surgery and he goes to get his schedule. His aide lets him know some information that he then shared with me. The insurance that we were paying for, which when we signed up for it I thought was a good thing; we had to pay a small copay just to go see the doctor; this insurance did not have an outpatient surgical benefit. Let me repeat that NO outpatient surgical benefit. I was already hurting, this was just like another gut punch. I guess I should back up three more weeks before that, I thought I had the day off but got called in to work. I really didn’t want to go but felt compelled to go.

One of my customers for the day was Dr. LaDonna Osborn as I was leaving she told me don’t worry everything will work out alright. At that time the words really didn’t mean that much to me. As I was recovering from the gut punch that I just received at the Doctors office, those words came to my mind, “Don’t worry everything will work out alright.

I went to the Surgeon’s business office to see what I had to do to make this surgery happen, I was told the fee would be about $1200 but because of the insurance issue if I could give them $400 up front and 3 monthly payments of $100 that would take care of the surgery bill. What luck I had earlier that day I had received a check for $400 for some reason. The business manager also told me about some paperwork I should do at the hospital

The next day I get a phone call from the hospital; good thing I was sitting down, the cost for the hospital surgical suite was over $14,000 I was told because of the insurance they would do it for about $10,000. So I go in to do the presurgery stuff and they ask for $150 down and they would be willing to make payment arrangements. I get all the paperwork done; the next day I receive a letter from the hospital the next day informing me that they would be taking care of the costs of the surgery suite and there would be no additional charges. When I read that letter, tears flooded my eyes and I heard in a still small voice, “child, I told you to not worry everything will work out alright.”

Proverbs 5:11 For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all of his paths. God’s voice and message is all around you if you listen keep your eyes and mind open to the still but small voice.

Gratitude Day 4 – A Guide to Wisdom

Today is the day to enjoy a day off and I am so grateful for that. My favorite mobile mechanic is coming by today to fix the shocks and brakes on the van.

Proverbs 4:11-12; I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered, when you run, you will not stumble.

Sometimes we are looking to plan things so far out we forget to take time to enjoy the present. Don’t focus on tomorrow, you are only given today. Don’t live in the past for that is the past. Live for today, enjoy today, and make the most of today. If you have not taken the time recently to reach out to someone that you care about, give them a call today.

Gratitude Day 3 — Finding Wisdom

My eyes have opened, I am still alive; thank you God for giving me another day. Each day becomes better because of you God. Today I have the pleasure of doing Quality Control inspections for a handful of our field techs. We have had quite a few new ones come on line so I have been asked to follow-up on their work. I am given a list of all their previous days work and then I get to chose which jobs I go visit. It is great to be able to pick where I want to be.

Proverbs 3:13-15 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding; for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare to her.

The best way to understand Wisdom is to understand that it is a continuous practice using critical thought. I learned a long time to not say “God give me wisdom” his response is always several exercises where you are going why? His response is “Child you asked for wisdom, I gave you homework to practice on; keep track of your lessons learned so that you may not repeat it; if you really want to pay attention watch how someone else deals with a similar problem and learn from their mistakes.

Gratitude Day 2 and A Royal Victory

I am very grateful for the 5 runs in the top of the 12th to bring a 7-2 victory and the crown to the KC Royals. A true demonstration of determination, tenacity and perseverance. I watched numerous times as gratitude to God from the players, each time they celebrated a milestone in the contest they pointed to the One who gave them their gift and talents. This is very important in light of what battles are looming in High School sports; 1 John 4:4 “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”

Proverbs 2:6 “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Sometimes you have to push the breathe button on life; when things aren’t quite going right focus on the one thing that you can control; your breath. Just become quiet and still and slowly breathe and then say God I’m not sure what I need to do; please put someone in my path that can help me locate the next step or breathe it in my ear so that I may understand. Focus on your breath, the one thing you can control and listen, and see where you are guided. In the 12th inning I had control over nothing but my breath I was excited in the top of the 12th when the 5 runs came in but I knew there was still the bottom. So during the bottom half I just focused hard on my breath and my dream for the Royals victory.

I have learned you get what you focus on; if your focus in on the lack in your life that is what you will receive. Change the focus from lack to abundance. You have to focus and believe so that you can achieve.

A Year of Gratitude

Every year at this time I see many post on Facebook where they want to say what they are thankful for. So I am going to try to do that not only for the next 30 days as most will but I intend on doing this for the next 365 days as well.

Today I am thankful for the ability to still have my Mother and Father with me, we have had a few scares this year and they are doing wonderful now. My sister has been through a lot but I still have her. I have three wonderful and healthy children. I have a wife who loves me and cares about me and has been doing so for the past 24+ years (I count dating in our time together as well). But today I am especially thankful for the one allows me to wake up and serve. My creator.

Proverbs 1:7-8 “The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”

As I review some of the events of the past week; I wonder if everyone focused on this one verse from the Bible if it would help affect what is happening in current events.

Today I want to encourage everyone to take time and focus on what they are grateful for; I also want to challenge you to write about it and also to read a Proverb a day. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs and take just 1 or 2 verses on focus on them each day.

Why 5.0

As many may have noticed I recently became the big 5.0. My loving and compassionate wife kept asking why you are putting a period between the five and zero. I told her it makes it a little easier for me to deal with. I want to think of aging similar to changes in software; hopefully improving with each version.

The first thing I did when I decided the 5.0 philosophy was to examine where am I now and why am I here and where do I want to go. I decided to take a balanced approach in to the three major life areas Spirit [Mind], body, and Soul. I have been working for some time on Spirit and Soul but the body… well; let’s just say I had a bunch of junk in the trunk. I have tried different routines and different diet concepts but eventually I would hit the 220 wall. I would try to get below it but for some reason I just couldn’t get there. At my worst I was over 250 lbs. I had my first health scare when I was 34 and another when I was 39. I think it scared my wife more than it did me; in her words if you die, I will resurrect you and kill you myself for leaving me. Don’t get me wrong I have tried many different things but I hit the 220 wall and bounced back to 230 kind of sucks having to have two different pair of pants it is amazing what 10 pounds does to your waist. A vicious cycle more like a rut. So I asked myself what would I tell a potential client that was wanting to make some adjustments in their life and the response was to get a coach. I have always been good about giving great advice and seeing people succeed with the advice that I gave them; however, when it comes to following my own advice; not so much. The realization was I can’t do this on my own; I can’t use my wife as my partner for this adventure (she could go to soft on me or worse) So I decided I am dealing with body so I am going to have think nutrition and getting the body moving so I found a Fitness Trainer. Here in Tulsa there are several excellent trainers but I chose to go with Elite Training Tulsa they were close to the house and would work with my schedule. I met with Whitney Finch and he put me through the paces to evaluate how much work was needed. We visited about my goals ideal weight back to where I was when I was 18 180-185 lbs.; get my core strengthened and to fix some upper body issues. I enjoyed the way he closed the sale with me he said I know where you want to go and I can help you get there but what is your commitment to yourself. I decided my budget would allow me to have a trainer 2 times a week. Actually the budget would allow me about once every other week if I were truly honest about it. But I needed help to hit this goal I knew I could not get myself there by myself. Whitney also told me this if you can get yourself here (pointing in the studio) we will get you there (pointing to my goals)

I was telling the wife about the big plan for my reveal on the 4th of July; I know I won’t be exactly where I want my body to be but I will definitely be close; her response was why? I told her about those 20 somethings and late teens boys that will be at the family reunion and I wanted to look good, she said is that really the reason you are doing this; not really dear it is so that you have my hard body to look at laughing out loud. Not really the real reason but bonus points the real reason was I wanted to be healthier, I didn’t want to get stuck in an attic or under a house; I didn’t want to be short on air. A funny thing happened the other day my Wife and I went to visit our 19 year old son. Matt is a great kid, quite stubborn, but still a great kid, he is about 6′ 4 “while he was in school he was about 175-180 ripped abs made fun of the old man and his kegerator. Was always talking about how he would always be looking good. When we went and saw him he was about 210 and had a pouch; me I’ve been working for a few weeks down from 225 to about 213 keg starting to disappear looking a little more like 1.5 liter bottles.

Chris M. my regular trainer said if you want to move faster towards this goal I will give you homework to do; it involved going on walks and some running. Not bad concepts. I live in Tulsa, not a very pedestrian friendly town (it is starting to get better). Tulsa is more designed for vehicles large streets no sidewalks. So I see a post from a friend of mine Rick Cooper talking about free running and the video attached reminded me of the scene in Quantum of Solace which I learned was called Parkour (I am thinking hardcore) So I have been adding a few obstacles; which is fairly easy in the neighborhood that I live in we have several retaining walls and the like so it has been fun. Chris has taught me that variety in your workout helps the body burn more efficiently and using High Intensity training in short periods yield higher results. I am with my trainer twice a week for 30 minutes, when I leave I am soaked; hit the shower and go to work. Today I discovered another key piece in effective workouts and the reason you should work out in the morning. If you do this right you can get some great results. One component of my nutrition program is that I use an interval fast, I don’t usually eat anything past 7:30 p.m. I wake up around 4:30 in the morning make me a fresh honey lemon water drink and then take the dog for a walk (run) if it training day I get to the studio at 5:30 otherwise I do a few pushups and sit ups trying to wake up sit ups and waking up sometimes has an issue you lay back and your eyes shut. If it was training day when I get back at 6:05 from the studio a glass of GPS recovery shower if I have time a bowl of oatmeal with almond milk and some craisins. On none train days I always get the oatmeal.

About 8:30 a small handful of almonds and some water about 10 a banana noon time for a quick greens salad (kale, spinach, and cabbage) with some cherry tomatoes some craisins and toasted edeme with balsamic vinegar lemon dressing. And water to drink. About 3:00 time for another handful of almonds. After work I come home and usually have something that falls into a whole food plant based meal; every now and again I will put in some lean meat. I try to minimize sugary sodas and drink primarily water and green teas.

What is a whole food plant based meal; visualize food as it comes from a farm sweet potatoes sliced into wedges tossed with some cold pressed olive oil seasonings, and nutritional yeast to make some delicious sweet potato wedge fries maybe a nice tossed green salad with some black beans. There are many great recipes out there; so be an adventurist. Understand that when you rebuilding your body you have to have good building blocks your body uses the food that you give it to make those blocks. You become what you eat. The most important part of developing a training program and to hit it consistently is to make it fun.

Today I shared a small portion of the Why behind the 5.0 project that I am working on. The key to achieving any goal is to understand the why? When you know the Why and it is big enough you will achieve that goal.
